La Unión falls within the Sierra Minera and has been a site of mining activity for more than 2000 years. The Sierra surrounding the town is peppered with former mineworkings, and the town has restored one of the most impressive, the Mina Agrupa Vicenta, as part of the Parque Minero mining park. The mine has 4000 square metres of impressive galleries and mineworkings 80 metres below the surface and is an interesting visit for both individuals and groups.
Walks to visit different mineworkings throughout the Sierra Minera can also be arranged via the Fundación Sierra Minera, which also operates the Matildes Mine, another fully restored mine which can be visited by arrangement.
La Unión also has a mining museum and at Portmán bay, an archaeological museum holds a collection of artefacts recovered from some of the Roman remains found in the area.
Tickets can also be purchased at the Tourist Office for the annual Cante de las Minas Flamenco Festival, one of the most important flamenco events in Spain, which is held in the Old market hall, or Catedral del cante as it is known during the festival.
