September 28 Military band concert in Aguilas
The band of the Tercio de Levante division perform at the seafront auditorium in Águilas
One of the events taking place in Águilas during the last weekend in September to coincide with the official swearing of allegiance to the flag which takes place on September 30 outside the Auditorio Infanta Doña Elena is a concert given by the Unidad de Música del Tercio de Levante, the military band belonging to one of the major naval infantry divisions of the Spanish armed forces.
Based in Cartagena, this military band play an important role in the annual Easter Tuesday and Good Friday processions of the city, continuing a tradition which dates back centuries. The origins of this participation lie in the armed guard provided by the Tercio of the Sea of Naples in the 16th century.
The pipes and drums group of the Naval Battalion of Cartagena was formed in 1789 and was placed in charge of the Navy’s installations there, and since then its name and headquarters have changed on many occasions.
It now has 34 members under the direction of Joaquín Grao Murcia, and the group has made various recordings for Spanish national television and radio programmes, as well as releasing CDs.
The concert at the Auditorio Infanta Doña Elena takes place on Thursday September 28 at 20.00 and admission is free of charge.
