Five Alicante chefs put their twist on the humble tapa
The fourth edition of La Millor Tapeta del Món brings local flavours and creative cooking to Alicante’s Central Market
Fancy discovering some of Alicante’s best tapas without having to travel around the province? That’s the idea behind a special five-day gastronomic event now taking place at the city’s Central Market.The fourth edition of La Millor Tapeta del Món is bringing chefs from across the province together at the Alicante Consumer Resource Education Centre, or CERCA, with each one showcasing a tapa created especially for the occasion.
The event began on Monday September 14 and continues on Tuesday September 15, Wednesday September 16, Monday September 21 and Tuesday September 22. The sessions run from 11am to 1pm and prior registration is required through the CERCA activities catalogue.
Rather than simply serving up a few familiar favourites, the idea is to see how Alicante’s chefs can take local ingredients and traditional flavours and give them a more contemporary twist.
The line-up also offers a tasty little tour of the province without leaving Alicante. Restaurants from Benidorm, El Campello, Alcoy, Torrevieja and Altea are all taking part, giving visitors the chance to discover different interpretations of local gastronomy in one place.
Monday’s opening session featured La Fava by Fran Burgos from Benidorm, which presented its tapa ‘Entre la Serra Gelada y nuestra Illeta’ live in front of a full audience, with local produce playing a starring role.
Next up on Tuesday September 15 is Seis Perlas from El Campello, followed by El Caragol de Francesc from Alcoy on Wednesday.
After the weekend break, the event returns on Monday September 21 with HB restaurant from Torrevieja. E-Tika from Altea will bring the series to a close on Tuesday September 22.
The event is being promoted by Alicante Ayuntamiento, the Costa Blanca Tourist Board and the Alicante Provincial Association of Hospitality Businesses.
Commerce and Hospitality Councillor Lidia López said Alicante’s cuisine is “an attraction and hallmark that drives our local economy, the hospitality industry and commerce, generating employment together with the sector.”
For visitors and residents alike, it’s also a chance to experience a little more of what the province has to offer, with the chefs bringing their own ideas, techniques and local flavours to one of Spain’s most recognisable culinary traditions.
And if five days of tapas whet your appetite, Alicante has another gastronomic event coming up later this week, with 36 wineries taking part in Quintana en Vendimia on Poeta Quintana Street on Saturday September 19, featuring wines from the Alicante Protected Designation of Origin.
