Andalusians spent 6% more on food last year, but still below the national average
New figures show households in the region paid an average of €1,692 per person on food and drink in 2025
Grocery bills rose across Spain last year, and Andalucía was no exception. New figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food show that average per capita spending on food and drink in the region reached €1,692.44 in 2025, a 6.2% increase on the previous year. In cash terms, that's around €102 more per person than in 2024.
The rise was driven by a combination of factors. Nationally, food prices increased by 3.9% on average, with the average cost of food reaching €3.25 per unit of consumption. Actual volumes consumed rose more modestly, up 0.8% across Spain as a whole. The result was total Spanish household food spending of €87.8 billion in 2025, a 4.8% year-on-year increase.
In Andalucía, consumption volumes also edged up, rising 1.6% to reach 544.70 units per person. That's an increase of 8.67 units compared to 2024, reflecting a modest but genuine uptick in what people are actually eating and drinking rather than just what they're paying for it.
Despite the increase, Andalucía remains below the national average on both measures. The Spanish average for per capita food spending was €1,874.75 in 2025, meaning Andalusians are spending around €182 less per head than the national figure. On consumption volumes, the national average was 577.32 units per person against Andalucía's 544.70.
In the regional rankings, Andalucía sits second to last for consumption volumes, just ahead of Madrid, which recorded the lowest figure at 505.86 units. On spending, Andalucía is third from bottom, behind Madrid at €1,678.79 and Castilla-La Mancha at €1,626.30.
The figures reflect a pattern seen across much of southern Spain, where food spending tends to be lower than in the centre and north of the country, partly reflecting differences in income levels and cost of living. Whether last year's 6.2% jump marks a genuine shift or simply reflects higher prices feeding through to household bills is a question the next set of figures will help answer.
