Which supermarkets will open in Spain during Easter 2024
During Holy Week, only Friday March 29 is a national holiday throughout Spain
The Easter holidays are fast approaching and in keeping with tradition, many businesses throughout Spain will shut up shop for a couple of days or shorten their working hours to mark the festival of Semana Santa.
Since Holy Week is quite early this year, it would be easy to get caught out and find your local supermarket closed. With the exception of Good Friday on March 29, which is a national holiday, vacation days vary from region to region, but we’ve outlined the opening hours of the larger stores over the next few days.
It’s important to remember that these schedules apply only to certain stores so it's always best to check with your nearest supermarket before heading out.
Mercadona
As usual, Mercadona will adjust its operating hours during the upcoming holidays. On Holy Thursday (March 28) and Good Friday (March 29), the chain will remain closed in most regions, with the exception of Catalonia and the Valencian Community where both days are considered normal workdays.
However, select locations in popular tourist areas will maintain limited hours until 3pm.
To confirm the opening times of your local Mercadona store, please refer to this link. Generally, Mercadona supermarkets operate from 9am until 9.30pm.
Lidl
Lidl, the German supermarket chain, will open some stores on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. To check if a specific establishment is open and on what days, you can find out through this link.
Carrefour
Carrefour will also decide which shops will open and which will remain closed based on which community has official holidays, so you’ll once again have to check the company’s website to be sure.
Dia
DIA supermarkets will remain open throughout Spain but hours will be reduced for holidays such as Good Friday and Easter Sunday (March 31), when they will open their doors between 10am and 3pm.
The chain’s full schedule can be found here.
Alcampo
Alcampo normally opens from 9am to 10pm but during Holy Thursday and Good Friday, closing times may vary. You can check the details of your local store here.
