Torre Pacheco Council unveils plans to reduce the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas of the municipality

As plans are presented to reduce the localised risk of flooding the Mayor of Torre Pacheco, Antonio León, and the Town Planning Councilor, Alberto Galindo, accompanied by members of the Municipal Council and technicians, visited Rambla Sur where several projects will soon be put out to tender.

Specifically, the Councillor for town planning explained the project for the reconstruction of the bridge over Avenida Gerardo Molina, where the existing drainage is to be upgraded and the water flow capacity of the road is expanded, the construction of the bridge will consist of three rows of frames, 3m wide and 2.5m high. This work is part of the agreement signed with the Ministry of Public Works on Highway Safety at an approximate cost of 820,000 euros. A bridge will also be built over Avenida Fontes to prevent the town from being cut off in episodes of heavy rain.

Similarly, the project for the pedestrian walkway that connects the San José Obrero neighbourhood with the Villa Esperanza promenade/CAES area has already been completed. It is a metal walkway with a design of two parallel and cable-stayed arches in a single span, supported at each side of the rambla (dry riverbed), which will be illuminated to make it safer and be more useful for all the residents.

In addition, there is mention that, in front of the Torre Pacheco treatment plant, there are plans to build another bridge to aleaviate the risk of the road being cut off in episodes of heavy rain.

Mayor Antonio León has highlighted the planned investments in terms of protection against floods that the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (Rivers authority) is going to undertake with the construction of a channel parallel to the northern deviation of Torre Pacheco to funnel all the channels that run towards the centre of Torre Pacheco and to divert them into the Rambla de la Señora towards Bernal and then in to the Rambla de El Albujón. This will also protect the CAES building with the construction of a perimeter wall.

In addition, the construction of a large collector is planned to intercept the water that runs along Calle Emilio Zurano and divert it directly to the riverbed.

The Mayor also praised the commitment of the Municipal Government Team in protecting the population against flooding with proof of this being the work that is currently being carried out on the bridge next to Gregal, as well as the completed bridge next to the Radar.
