Three men sentenced to 8 years for gang rape of British tourist on the Costa Blanca
The young woman was attacked twice before being robbed while on holiday in Benidorm
Three men have been sentenced to more than eight years in prison each for the brutal gang rape of a British tourist in Benidorm. The men, whose identities have not been released pending a potential appeal, were found guilty of the heinous crime following a trial at Alicante's Audiencia Provincial Court.
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was attacked by the three men in a secluded area after they approached her near a pub in the popular Costa Blanca tourist destination. She was raped twice within a span of four hours, with the first assault occurring in a park near a football ground and the second near El Cisne flea market.
According to prosecutors, the men began chatting to the victim in a Benidorm pub before carrying out the sickening attack. They also stole a watch and ring from her worth 365 euros. The victim managed to escape after the second assault and alerted her mother when she returned to their hotel.
The court heard how the victim remembered waking up on the back seat of a car with her clothes unbuttoned and her legs outside of the vehicle. She also recalled feeling pain and seeing "three or four men" near her.
Other evidence, including a call to the emergency services from a witness who saw a woman walking half-naked along a road near to where the second series of rapes took place, was also taken into account.
The horrific gang-rape occurred during the early hours of October 2, 2016. The men, who are all aged between 24 and 34, have been sentenced to eight years and six months in prison each. Prosecutors had sought sentences of just over 12 years for each of the men when they went on trial in November last year.
