This €600K Alicante car park is the weirdest-looking new construction in Valencia, but there's a reason for it
A €645,000 investment creates a key sustainable mobility hub connecting Vega Baja towns
Almoradí has just unveiled the largest shared vehicle parking facility in the Valencian Community, aiming to boost sustainable travel across the Vega Baja region. This innovative carpool parking lot, funded with €645,000 from the Generalitat, provides 131 spaces designed to promote car sharing and ease the region’s heavily car-reliant daily commutes.Strategically positioned at the crossing of the CV-912 and the AP-7 motorway, it forms a crucial link for thousands travelling daily between Almoradí, Daya Nueva, and Dolores. Vicente Martínez Mus, Second Vice President and Minister of Environment, Infrastructure, and Territory, said the new lot “improves regional mobility by offering a safe, organised, and accessible space to facilitate carpooling.” He also described these shared vehicle facilities as “destined to become a key tool for sustainable transportation,” highlighting its promise as an efficient and eco-friendly way to travel.
Reflecting local pride and agricultural heritage, the parking area’s design echoes the shape of an artichoke, a symbol synonymous with Almoradí. Mayor María Gómez expressed thanks for the investment, emphasising the parking lot’s role in bringing neighbours closer: “The Vega Baja region is densely populated and heavily reliant on cars. This facility unites us and makes carpooling easier, helping us save money, cut emissions, and encourage sustainable mobility.”The parking lot is well equipped with lighting, clear signage, renewed landscaping, and reserved spaces for people with reduced mobility. Beyond carpooling, it serves as a meeting point and occasional rest area for drivers. Currently, Alicante province boasts five carpool parking facilities, with plans to expand the network to other municipalities.
Almoradí’s council sees this project as an important step toward reducing emissions, improving regional connections, and strengthening infrastructure for daily commuters. “We will continue working with the Generalitat to ensure Almoradí remains a benchmark in mobility, sustainability, and quality infrastructure,” concluded the mayor.
This new shared parking facility marks a significant move forward in sustainable transportation for the region, easing traffic pressures and supporting greener travel habits for thousands every day.
