October 10 Free guided walk in the historic area of Monteagudo
The castle and palace of the Wolf King on a walk through the Huerta of Murcia!
In the countryside around the city of Murcia early October sees the celebration of the “Semana de la Huerta”, in which the heritage of the area which first made the Region such a hotspot for fruit and vegetable gardening celebrates not only its agriculture but also its history, landscape and traditions.
At the heart of the “huerta” is Monteagudo, now an outlying district of the regional capital but for many centuries a separate sentiment on the old road to Alicante. Few visitors and foreign residents visit here, but many will be aware of the statue of Christ which was erected on top of the steep mountain which gives the town its name, and which is visible from the motorway.
This statue is actually placed on top of the remains of a fortress built in the 12th century by Ibn Mardanis, otherwise known as the Rey Lobo (or Wolf King) of Murcia, and under a kilometre away stand the remains of his palace complex on another, smaller hill. Both of these landmarks can be seen on this free guided walk on Saturday 10th October, beginning at the excellent visitors’ centre below the castle of Monteagudo at 10.00.
Although the event is free of charge, bookings are required beforehand through Aldaba by telephone on 968 219099 or by email to turismodemurcia@aldabacongresos.com.
