Málaga airport is having one of its busiest summers ever and it's only just getting started
More than 6,100 flights are scheduled across the first ten days of the summer peak season, with international routes leading the way
If it feels like there are more planes in the sky over the Costa del Sol than usual right now, that is because there are. Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport has launched into the 2026 summer season at full tilt, with 6,140 flights scheduled across the first ten days of the peak operation, nudging just ahead of the 6,105 recorded during the same period last year.The opening weekend set the tone. Friday June 26 turned out to be the busiest day of the three, with 644 flights handled, 137 domestic and 507 international. Saturday eased slightly to 585, before Sunday June 28 surged back to 632 movements. In total, 1,861 flights passed through the airport across those first three days alone.
The pace is not letting up this week either. Today, Monday June 29, has 599 flights scheduled, Tuesday June 30 brings 604, and Wednesday July 1, the first day of the month that most people think of as the real start of summer, clocks in at 614. Thursday July 2 adds another 608 to the tally.
Then comes the weekend, which is shaping up to be the busiest stretch of the entire operation. Friday July 3 is the standout day, with 637 flights on the books, 131 domestic and 506 international. Saturday July 4 brings 595, and Sunday July 5 rounds things off with 622, wrapping up a ten-day period that has firmly set the tone for the season ahead.
International tourism is driving the vast majority of activity throughout, which will surprise nobody who has watched the Costa del Sol's global profile grow in recent years. The airport figures sit alongside broader tourism data showing Málaga province is having a remarkable year, already recording over eight million hotel overnight stays by the end of May and cementing its position as the leading tourism destination in Andalucía.
