Murcia heatwave turns deadly with 22 fatalities
Orange weather alerts remain in place across much of the Region of Murcia as the third summer heatwave takes hold
The Region of Murcia is facing another intense spell of summer heat this week, with temperatures expected to climb well above 40°C in many areas and health officials warning residents not to underestimate the dangers.
According to Spain's Daily Mortality Monitoring System (MoMo), 22 deaths in the Region of Murcia have been linked to high temperatures so far this month.
The figures do not refer only to cases of heatstroke. Experts also include deaths where extreme heat is believed to have worsened existing health conditions such as heart disease, respiratory illnesses and kidney problems.
The warning comes as the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) maintains orange alerts across much of the Region.
Forecasters are predicting highs of up to 42°C in the Vega del Segura, while temperatures could reach 41°C in the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas. The Altiplano and Northwest are also expected to swelter, with temperatures approaching 40°C.
Regional officials have warned that some locations could see temperatures climb even higher during the hottest part of the week.
With the mercury soaring, the Region of Murcia's health authorities are urging residents to take sensible precautions, particularly when it comes to protecting those most at risk.
Older people, young children, pregnant women and anyone living with chronic health conditions are considered especially vulnerable during periods of extreme heat.
The advice remains familiar but important: stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during the hottest hours of the day and spend as much time as possible in cool or air-conditioned spaces.
The regional government has also stepped up awareness campaigns aimed at outdoor workers, particularly those employed in agriculture and construction, where the risk of heat-related illness is significantly higher. Employers have been encouraged to adapt working hours, increase rest breaks and ensure workers have regular access to drinking water.
Agricultural organisation COAG Murcia has echoed those recommendations, reminding workers to stop immediately if they experience symptoms associated with heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
At the same time, the ongoing heatwave has increased concerns about wildfire risk. Special restrictions remain in place in forested and rural areas, including limits on machinery and activities that could generate sparks and start fires.
