Murcia on red alert for 44ºC temperatures: Weather forecast July 23-26
Lorca, Águilas and other towns are on red alert on Thursday, a warning which represents a serious risk to life
Weather alerts on Thursday July 23
After days of relentless heat, the Region of Murcia is heading into what could be the hottest day of the summer so far. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued its highest-level weather warning for Thursday, with temperatures forecast to reach a staggering 44ºC in some areas.
The extreme heat comes as much of the Region is already struggling through sleepless tropical nights, while forecasters are also warning of thunderstorms, strong winds and even hail later in the day. The good news is that some relief is finally on the horizon, with temperatures gradually easing from Friday onwards.
Thursday July 23
Thursday will definitely be the standout day of the week, with red weather alerts in force across the Vega del Segura, the Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas between 1pm and 9pm.
Not to labour the point, but a red weather alert signifies extreme, potentially life-threatening conditions and should always be taken very seriously.
Temperatures are expected to climb to 44ºC in the worst-affected areas this Thursday, creating conditions that health authorities warn pose a serious risk to life, particularly for older people, young children and those with existing health conditions.
Murcia city, Lorca and Yecla are all forecast to reach around 43ºC, but the heat won't be far behind elsewhere.
Orange alerts have been issued for the Altiplano, where temperatures could reach 42ºC, and the Northwest, where highs of around 40ºC are expected. Even the cooler coastal areas aren't escaping the heat, with yellow alerts covering Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón as temperatures rise to around 38ºC.
To make matters worse, the entire Region of Murcia is also under a yellow warning for storms between 4pm and 9pm. Forecasters say the combination of intense heat and dust suspended in the atmosphere could trigger thunderstorms capable of producing hail and strong gusty winds.
Overnight temperatures will remain stubbornly high, offering little relief after an exhausting day.
Friday July 24
Friday will still be exceptionally hot, but temperatures should begin to edge down slightly inland.
The Guadalentín Valley, Lorca and Águilas remain under orange alerts, while yellow warnings continue for the Vega del Segura, Campo de Cartagena, Mazarrón and parts of the Northwest.
Skies will be partly cloudy with some high cloud and lingering Saharan dust. Light winds will dominate, although stronger southerly breezes could develop during the afternoon.
Saturday July 25
By Saturday, the heatwave should finally begin to loosen its grip on the Region.
Temperatures are expected to fall across most areas and, importantly, all heat alerts have been lifted. Skies will remain partly cloudy with some dust still hanging in the atmosphere, but conditions should feel noticeably more comfortable than earlier in the week.
Light westerly winds and coastal sea breezes will help take the edge off the heat.
Sunday July 26
Sunday brings further signs that the worst is over.
Forecasters are expecting mostly clear skies and another drop in temperatures, making it the most pleasant day of the weekend. Light winds and coastal breezes will continue and there are currently no weather warnings in force anywhere in the Region of Murcia.
Although cooler conditions are on the way, Thursday's extreme temperatures should not be taken lightly. Health officials recommend avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, staying indoors where possible, drinking plenty of water and checking regularly on elderly relatives, neighbours and anyone who may be vulnerable.
Pets should also be kept cool and well hydrated, and drivers are advised never to leave children or animals inside parked vehicles, even for a few minutes.

- Friday July 24: Min 23ºC; Max 42ºC
- Saturday July 25: Min 18ºC; Max 40ºC
- Sunday July 26: Min 17ºC; Max 38ºC
