Mazarron Local Police warn against stealing electricity citing a case in Camposol
Police warn against “hot wiring” electricity supplies which could result in injury as well as criminal proceedings
Mazarrón Policía Local recently issued a general warning regarding the theft of electricity by bypassing the authorised connection, a practice that is not only illegal but could also result in serious injury to the perpetrator and the public. The police issued the warning accompanied by a photograph taken on the Camposol urbanisation. The wording of the cautionary advice was:
“An unauthorised connection of the electrical supply can represent, in addition to a crime of theft of electrical current, a great risk both for those who carry out this practice and for other neighbours.
When such manipulation (of equipment) is observed, as in this case in Camposol, the electrical company responsible for the supply is requested to correct it.
The perpetrator is identified and also reported to the corresponding on-duty inspector (Guardia Civil) for the investigation of possible criminal violations”
In recent years there have been reports from various parts of the region, including on Camposol, of electricity cable being stolen. This could have been the work of an organised gang who were arrested in Mazarrón in June of this year during a joint police and Guardia Civil investigation codenamed Operation 'Cooper 23'. It was estimated that the gang were responsible for the disappearence of 300,000 euros worth of electrical cabling
