Granada's pet population passes 260,000
Dogs lead the way as registered pets grow and “dangerous” breeds decline in the province
Granada is very much a pet-loving province, with 261,820 registered animals on the books as of Thursday December 5. That is nearly a 6% rise on the 247,663 recorded at the end of 2024, and it means Granada now accounts for just over 10% of all registered pets in Andalucía, where there are more than 2.5 million animals in total.Dogs clearly dominate local households. Of the pets listed in the provincial figures, 229,885 are dogs, followed by 39,269 cats. There are also 1,129 ferrets and another 537 pets of other species, according to data provided by the Junta de Andalucía. The registration system does not include animals over 15 years old that have not been deregistered or vaccinated in the last two years, in line with regional rules.
Across Andalucía, Málaga currently tops the list with 552,679 domestic animals, while Huelva sits at the bottom with 166,361. Seville has 512,795 registered animals, Cádiz 370,021, Córdoba 267,342, Jaén 200,181 and Almería 194,933. With its 261,820 pets, Granada takes fifth place in the regional ranking at the end of the year, based on figures from the Andalusian Animal Identification Registry (RAIA).
Registration with RAIA is compulsory for pet owners and plays a key role in animal health and welfare. The registry helps put in place both preventative and emergency health programmes to stop the spread of diseases in people and other animals, and it supports the recovery of lost or stolen pets as well as action against animal abuse. RAIA also records conditions requiring mandatory treatment, such as rabies vaccination, and holds the clinical file for each animal, which makes day-to-day health control easier across Andalucía.
The statistics also look specifically at dogs classed as “potentially dangerous” (PPP) across the region. Out of more than 2.5 million dogs in Andalucía, 69,375 belong to breeds on this list, which includes Pitt Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu, Akita Inu and Doberman. In Granada, there are 7,751 dogs in this category as of Thursday December 5, down from 8,240 in 2024 and 8,090 in 2023, showing a gradual downward trend after a slight rise in earlier years.
Together, the figures show a province where pets are firmly part of everyday life, with more animals being registered and greater care taken over their health, safety and behaviour. It shows just how important companion animals have become across Granada and the wider Andalucía region.
