Cartagena prepares dog-friendly beaches for the summer of 2023
Canine showers are among the novelties at the doggy beaches in Playa Paraíso, Los Belones and Isla Plana
With the school holidays and the peak summer beach tourism season just around the corner the Town Hall of Cartagena has made sure that its three official dog-friendly beaches are fully equipped and prepared for the next couple of months, even installing doggy showers at two of them.
The three designated beaches are those of La Calera in Isla Plana, la Lengua de la Vaca between Islas Menores and Los Nietos on the inland shore of the Mar Menor and the stretch of sand known as Las Salinas between southern end of La Manga and Playa Paraíso. It is at the latter two that the canine showers have been installed, and at Las Salinas a row of wooden posts has been installed to clearly define the limit between the canine area and the “normal” beach.
All three areas are clearly signposted with boards reiterating the rules applicable: aggressive or potentially aggressive dogs and females on heat are not permitted, and puppies aged under 4 months are also banned. All animals must be fully vaccinated, and owners under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
At the same time, owners must ensure that their pets do not annoy other bathers and must collect faeces and deposit them in the containers provided. Failure to do so can result of fines of between 500 and 1,500 euros.
