April 25 Free Modernist soirée at the Town Hall in Cartagena
These clandestine Bernalina-style parties were banned in Cartagena in the 1920s!
A series of guided visits, events and exhibitions are being held in Cartagena this spring to celebrate the city’s Modernist heritage, dating from the influx of wealth around the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and among them is this soirée entitled “Clandestina”, a celebration of the “cuplé” musical fashion which was popular at the time and which prefigure the later “copla” genre.
As well as the cuplé, there are also elements of the revue and other popular music, with the dominant figure being “La Bernalina”, one of the most famous cuplé artists along with the “butler” Agapito and her pianist Genaro. She held secret parties to which she invited well-known illustrious people of the time, most especially during the 1920s.
These parties were always held in different venues as they were frowned upon and had to evade the attention fo the authorities as they were considered “indecorous”, and one of their characteristics was the intimate atmosphere and the involvement of those attending in the performances themselves. Surprises were also a constant feature of the events!
This one is being held at the Palacio Consistorial at 20.30 and free bookings can be made online from Friday 17th April to Thursday 23rd April online here. For further information contact the tourist office of Cartagena in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (telephone 968 128955).
