April 23 Free dramatized tour of the Palacio Aguirre in Cartagena
Relive the style of the early 20th century in Modernist Cartagena
A series of guided visits, events and exhibitions are being held in Cartagena this spring to celebrate the city’s Modernist heritage, dating from the influx of wealth around the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and among them is this dramatized tour of one of the most impressive buildings in the centre, the Palacio Aguirre.
Designed by architect Víctor Beltrí in the early 20th century, the building was commissioned by a wealthy industrialist at the time and still contains the original imperial staircase, which has three flights and is flanked by marble columns, an office or study decorated with carved wood, a chapel with French glass decoration from Bordeaux and a rococo living room where paintings by Cecilio Pía hang. Participants will be treated to a variety of scenes from everyday life during the Modernist period in different rooms in the house, recreating the customs and lifestyle of the bourgeoisie in Cartagena in the 1900s.
Two 30-minute tours are being held (in Spanish) at 11.00 and 12.00 and booking is open from Friday 17th April to Thursday 23rd April online here. For further information contact the tourist office of Cartagena in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento (telephone 968 128955).
