Aguilas launches vital housing and support project for the homeless
The plan will provide alternative accommodation and essential social services to the homeless in Águilas
In conjunction with the Lorca Association of Children and Parents Against Drugs (NYPACOLD), Águilas Town Council will designate a chunk of EU Next Generation funds to provide specialised housing and resources for the municipality’s homeless population.
The project began last September in response to the social exclusion faced by so many destitute people in the Region of Murcia. According to Águilas City Council, the plan is aimed at “people who are deprived of access to a home, a job and the economic resources necessary for their livelihood. People who face loneliness, the breaking of their social and family ties and, consequently, the loss of the true social network essential for life.”
The following services will be available at the housing project:
- Accommodation and maintenance, coexistence, cooperation and self-help activities, collaboration in the search for other specific resources and integration activities in the local community.
- Social care, individual and group therapy, as well as individualised recovery programmes with flexible supervision over time.
In addition, the management of the service will:
- Carry out periodic monitoring and supervision of previously established rules of operation and coexistence.
- Facilitate quick interventions in crisis situations and the development of social skills that avoid or minimise the risk of problems arising.
Through the development of the project, the Águilas administration hopes to support and enhance the lives of homeless people who, “due to their mental illness, addictions and/or social, family and work situation, present some difficulties to autonomously cover their accommodation and support needs, because they do not have the means, they do not have family or they cannot attend to them.”
