New statue and mural adorn the fishing jetty in Puerto de Mazarrón
The decorative elements pay tribute to local fishermen and the Virgen del Carmen
The Town Hall of Mazarrón has unveiled two major new landmarks to honour and recognize the local fishermen and their traditions in Puerto de Mazarrón.
The first of them is a statue of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen and seafarers, located on the fishing port jetty, and consists of a 4.2-metre-high Macael marble statue. Weighing approximately 4.8 tons, the statue has been placed on a specially built plinth, looking out over the sea and the easter side of the Bay of Mazarrón.
Running along the inner wall of the port, meanwhile, a giant mural measuring 960 square metres has been created, showing aspects of traditional fishing technique and the development of the port since the early 20th century as well as the celebrations of the feast day of the Virgen del Carmen on 16th July.
As well as representing the importance of fishing in the economy and growth of Mazarrón, these two new decorative elements are expected to act as tourist attractions and make a walk along the port wall an even more attractive proposition.
