Electricity bills in Spain hit highest August level since Ukraine war energy crisis
The typical regulated-tariff household paid €96.65 in August, almost 20% more than during the same month last year

Electricity bills in Spain have climbed to their highest August level since the energy crisis following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, despite a continued increase in the amount of power being generated from renewable sources.
The average household on Spain’s regulated electricity tariff paid €96.65 in August, according to an analysis by consumer organisation Facua-Consumidores en Acción. That’s 19.8% more than the €80.71 paid by a comparable household in August 2025.
It’s the highest August figure since 2022, when energy prices surged following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The average bill that August reached a much higher €158.30.
For comparison, the same type of household paid an average of €78.21 in August 2024 and €73.21 in August 2023.
The increase comes despite another strong month for solar generation in Spain. Photovoltaic power production was 27.6% higher than in August 2025, accounting for around 14.6% of the country’s total electricity generation.
Solar power was the biggest source of electricity generation during the month, as it often is during the summer. However, the huge amount of sunshine hasn’t been enough to prevent electricity prices from rising, particularly during periods when solar production drops and demand remains high.
The extreme summer heat has played a part in this. As temperatures rise, electricity demand increases as households and businesses rely more heavily on air conditioning and other cooling systems. Solar generation also falls when the sun goes down, meaning other sources have to step in to keep the electricity system running.
As a result, the average price reached €118 per megawatt-hour, more than 70% above the figure recorded a year earlier.
Prices were particularly high for much of the month, with the wholesale market price staying below €100 per MWh on only three days, August 22 to 24, according to figures from Iberian electricity market operator OMIE.
Changes to electricity taxation have also affected what households pay. Until the end of May, measures introduced to reduce the impact of higher energy costs were helping to keep bills down. From June 1, however, VAT on electricity returned to 21%, after having been reduced to 10%.
